- Apr 09, 2018 The Hyper Tough Multi-meter is an essential tool for professional electricians and other technicians. With 14-range operation and a rotary dial, it is easy to select the setting you need for the task at.
- A circuit tester is one of the most important tools a homeowner or electrician can have to verify the integrity of electrical wiring and receptacles. Circuit testers have external probes or prongs designed to fit into the slots of an electrical outlet. The probes make contact with the exposed.
- The CT70 AC Circuit Load Tester can test outlets or circuits under load for proper wiring, reverse polarity, and the presence of a ground. The CT70 uses a simple menu-driven display to allow the user to quickly see line voltage, voltage drop under full load, ground-to-neutral voltage, and line impedance.
- Test battery life using a multimeter or volt-ohm meter (VOM). Analog-type multimeters use a needle and printed scales to display results from a variety of electrical tests. A multimeter is a black box of electronic circuitry that allows you to troubleshoot just about any type of electrical wiring.

Circuit Tester
Know if outlets are 'live'
52060
Important: When using, be careful not to touch live wires or the metal leads of
the tester. This is not a diagnostic instrument and is not intended to detect a
combination of defects in a wiring circuit. It is a simple tester for detecting the
presence of voltages between 90 and 300 volts. Voltages less than 90 volts may
be present but may not be detected by this device. Any indication of wiring faults
should be referred to a quolified electrician for correction.
How to Test Outlets:
Determine if the circuit is live by inserting
the tester leads into the outlet slots.
Tester will glow if circuit is live.
Check 0 3 SLOT-120VAC grounding outlet
by inserting one lead into the hot
(narrow) slot and the other lead into the
U-shaped ground slot. Tester should
glow. Then test between wide side
(neutral) and 'U' shaped (ground). Tester
should NOT glow.
Check a 2-SLOT-120VAC outlet by
inserting one leod into the hot (narrow)
slot and the other into the wide slot.
Tester should glow. To determine hot
wire on 2 wire circuits, insert one probe
into the narrow slot and touch the other
probe to the metal mounting screw or
metal plate. If screw is grounded, tester
will glow. Remaining slot is the neutral.
3 SLOT-240VAC Receptacles: Test for
normal (llOV) glow between round hole
(ground) and either hot side. Note
brighter glow (220V) across both hot
sides.
Note: If circuit is properly grounded,
tester will glow with same brightness os
for live circuit. If brightness is less for
ground slot, refer the condition to a
qualified electrician.

You’ll see your circuit breakers (and they’re all clearly labeled, of course).
Always take safety precautions: Wear rubber shoes when you work on a control panel and make sure the floor underneath the panel is dry.
Touch one prong to the terminal screw on the breaker and the other to the ground.
If you decide to use a voltage tester, don’t touch a bare wire or the neutral as you’re testing. If you do, you’re in for a bit of a jolt.
